This is definitely a hell of a time to be a route driver.
The morning started off as normal. Wake up at 5 AM, drive to the warehouse at 6 AM, make sure all materials are loaded into the van by 6:30 AM, and head out at 7 AM. It was a rather muggy morning with an overcast sky. The warm dawn would turn cold by the afternoon.

The “coronavirus” has been active since the first case emerged in Wuhan, China on November 19th, 2019. What started as a flu-like outbreak went global with nearly every continent facing the virus.
As of this writing, the coronavirus has infected approximately 140,000 worldwide, resulting in 5,400 deaths. Portions of China and Italy remain on lockdown while the death toll continues to climb.
The United States’ first known case of coronavirus occurred on January 21st. By March, the pandemic had reached Kansas, resulting in the death of a 70-year-old Johnson County resident. Governor Laura Kelly declared a state of emergency on Thursday the 12th, just a day before President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency for the nation overall. What seemed like an overhyped crisis a month ago was now real, and hand sanitizer became more noticeable wherever we went.
From the energy plant to a tractor depot 50-miles away, we made our presence known at the height of a conversation between our customers. We did our job and they pressed on with the topic.
A: “They say all schools in the area will be closed as early as next week.”
