The Bad Man - There would be no question in your mind that John Newton, born in London in 1725, was a bad boy turned bad man. His mother died when he was 7 and at the age of 11 his father sent him to sea where young John was exposed to a life of drunkenness, profanity and immorality which turned him into a rebellious teen. Eventually he became captain of his own slave ship where he had a reputation of being foul-mouthed, ill tempered, despised by subordinates and superiors and only cared about himself. One night John Newton hit bottom when he was publicly humiliated, beaten and stripped of his rank for misbehaving. Caught in a fierce storm, he came face to face with a gripping fear of death and terror filled his heart as cabin filled with water, knowing he had little chance of survival. He remembered the Bible verses and hymns his Mother had taught him and tried to call out to God for mercy but realized that he didn't deserve it, having ignored God for so long. The next day the storm subsided and the battered ship found safe harbor. Newton became convinced that "there is a God who hears and answers prayers." His life had been spared. In the midst of the storm, Newton realized that he needed to be saved; from the raging storm without and the tumult of sin within. Repenting of his past sins, he surrendered his life to God and instantly became a new man and later a pastor. His tombstone is inscribed with an epitaph which he wrote:
The Good Man - A rich young ruler came to Jesus and asked, "Good Master what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life? So Jesus answered him, "“Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
He said to Him, “Which ones?”
Jesus said, “‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother,’]and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?”
Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Good man - It is a common saying that God could not be present everywhere so he made a mother. The saying is also true as the status of the mother is equivalent to God. She is the one who gave us life and made us stand on our own feet. My mother is the idol of selfless love and ever-ready for me despite being tired. My mother is the one on whom I can completely rely on. She is the one who will never say no to our wishes. She never lets us feel the difference in love and showers any time. My mother is like the sun that chases out all darkness and gives the light of happiness and love upon me.
Bad man - If one listens to an audio version of a novel, has one “read” it? I listened to this novel in two sittings and two jogging sessions. And with the author’s voice in my earbuds, it certainly feels to me like Another aspect of this novel that pleasantly surprised me was how often characters “turned/”shifted” from positive to negative, or negative to positive (and yes, I’ve been reading Robert McKee …)
