What is the difference between a tunnel and a bridge?

Bridges tend to be built to go over some thing, eg a river or rail tract, a road or a canal. They can work the other way round of course, in that they can be built to allow something underneath.

Tunnels tend to go through or under. The Mersey has four tunnels that go under the river. The rail lines are all in tunnels before, in the case of the national lines, emerging onto the level. They go through or under (depending on how you wish to phrase it) a quite large sandstone ridge just out side Liverpool City center.

But the terms can be flexible at times. Roachdale has a small river The Roach running through it. But in the town center it is covered over. Now it is not wide or deep. But the “Bridge” is the widest in at least the UK. I am not fully aware of the dimensions but the length is only a few feet, but the width is over 1k feet.
