Distance between a point and a line is the length of the line segment which joins the point to the line perpendicularly.

The distance from point (m, n) to the line Ax+By+C=0 is given by

D=\frac{\mid Am+Bn+C\mid}{\sqrt{A^2+B^2}}

Where A, B and C are constants

m and n are co-ordinates

So, it is the shortest distance between the length of a perpendicular line segment from the line to the point.
