Answer:

Solution: Divide the absolute values of the two integers. Following the rules stated above, when dividing integers with different signs the final answer (quotient) is negative. ... Then we take that quotient and divide it by the integer that follows. We get –36 ÷ –9 = + 4.

 \bf Division \: of \: Integers

Rule 1 : If two integers both of same sign are divided than absolute value of two integers are divided and positive sign is assigned to the quotient.

For example :

(i) 36÷3 = 12

(ii) -100 ÷ (-10) = 10

Rule 2 : If two integers of different sign are divided, then absolute value of two integers are divided and negative sign is assigned to the quotient.

For example :

(i) -100 ÷ (25) = -4

(ii) 99 ÷ (-3) = -33

Properties of Division of Integers

  • Closure property

If A and b are integers then a ÷ b is not always an integer.

For example:

(i) -28 ÷ 2 = -14 is an integer

(ii) 7÷2 = 7/2 is not an integer

  • Commutative property

If a and b are integers then a ÷ b ≠ b ÷ a. So, Commutative property does not hold in division of integers.

  • a ÷ a = 1 if a ≠ 0
  • a ÷ 1 = a
  • 0 ÷ a = 0
  • a ÷ 0 is not defined
