Q. A hall of 3 m length is connected with an underground garage which is polluted with CO at 34 mg m-3. The width of hall is 1 m and height is 2 m. At the end of this hall, there is an office with ventilation maintenance of CO at 10 mg m-3. What is the CO flux towards the office when diffusion coefficient is 0.5 m2min-1?

Solution: According to Fick's law,
Nx= AD* difference in concentration/length over which concentration gradient occurs
where, Nx= mass flux
A= Area over which diffusion occurs
D= Diffusion coefficient

We know,
A= 2*1
= 2 m2
D= 0.5 m2 min-1
Concentration difference= 34-10
= 24 mg m-3
Length over which concentration gradient occurs= 3 m
Therefore, NX= 2*0.5*24/3
= 6 mg min-1
