Ultrasonic waves are defined as those pressure / longitudinal waves having frequency greater than 20,000 Hz.

They have many applications in both human lives as well as in animals:

1. Bats can emit Ultrasonic waves. They receive the reflected waves and hence can derive their trajectory of motion and avoid any obstacle.

2. Ultrasonic waves are used in Medical Instruments like USG, where reflected wave is used to map the internal part of any organ or body.

3. These waves are used to clean certain parts of instruments which are difficult to access. For example : Spiral tubes.

4. Ultrasound can be used to detect any cracks in metal blocks. This helps to create better quality metal blocks .

5. Ultrasonic waves are used to break small stones present in Kidneys and Ureters and hence relieve from pain.

6. It is used in ECHO- CARDIOGRAPHY, where waves are used to create a picture of the heart of the patient. This helps in diagnosis of any macro - problems in Heart.
