Demerits of valence bond theory: Valence bond theory does not give information regarding magnetic moment due to orbital contribution of electrons. It can not explain the spectral properties of complexes. It does not explain the relative stability of complex compounds.

The condition of maximum overlap described by the VBT can be used to explain how covalent bonds are formed in many molecules. The theory can also offer insight into the ionic character of chemical bonds.
