Burns and scalds are damage to the skin caused by heat. Along with damage to the skin, they can cause damage to the underlying tissues.
The risk of infection is great in the case of burns. Burns can be of three types.
1) First degree : Superficial burns affecting only the epidermis of the skin.
2) Second degree : More dangerous burns, as they may affect the underlying tissues and blood vessels; can cause blisters.
3) Third degree : Deeper burns that affect the underlying tissues, muscles and even bone. To treat minor burns, get the person away from the heat source to stop burning.
Run cool water over the burn to relieve pain. Do not use ice water. Do not put any ointments or butter on the burn as these can make it worse. Do not break in case blisters have formed. Also, avoid water on blisters. Gently apply a gauze bandage or a clean, soft cloth. Seek medical help immediately.
A broken or a cracked bone is called a fracture. It can be the result of an injury, accident or violent trauma. It is usually not a life threatening injury. However, fractures require immediate medical attention. Some symptoms of a broken bone are - intense pain in the injured area which gets worse when you move it; numbness in the injured area; swelling and deformity in the injured area; the broken bone may protrude through skin and be accompanied by heavy bleeding.
Follow these steps to provide first aid in case of a fracture.
Stop bleeding by elevating and applying pressure with a clean cloth or bandage. Immobilise the injured area by letting the patient stay still. Applying a splint or sling can help immobilise the limb. Apply a cold pack to the injured area and get medical help.
