Bayer's test a laboratory test to point out  the presence of double bond in the given unsaturated compound.

In this reaction, unsaturated compound i.e. double bond is react with  dilute alkaline KMnO₄  to form vicinal glycols.

In this reaction KMnO₄ is absorb ,therefore, purple colour of potassium permanganate vanishes.

Mechanism:

MnO₄⁻ attacks double bond to form complex which on hydrolysis give vicinal diols i.e. 1,2-diols.
