Factors affect the performance of flat plate collector

(a) Incident solar radiation

(b) Selective Surface

(c)Number of visors

(d) Distance between the absorber plates and the glass cover

(e) Tilt Manifold

(g) Dust on the visor

Factors affecting the performance of flat sensors:

(a) Incident solar radiation:

  • As the solar flux increases, the heat absorbed by the collector increases, which improves the collector performance.

(b) Selective Surface:

  • By using the material for surfaces that are very sensitive to radiation, absorption can be maximized.
  • Selective surfaces must be able to withstand high temperatures between 300° and 400°C, free from oxidation and free from corrosion.

(c) Number of visors:

  • Increasing the number of visors reduces heat loss due to internal convection but also prevents radiation transmission inside the collector.
  • It is not recommended to use more than two visors to optimize the system.

(d) Distance between the absorber plates and the glass cover:

  • The more space there is between the absorber and the cover plate, the less heat is lost inside. The collection efficiency will be increased.
  • On the other hand, however, increasing the distance between them will provide shade for each side wall in the morning and evening and reduce the absorbed solar flux.

(e) Tilt Manifold:

  • Flat receivers do not track the sun and must be tilted at the latitude angle of the location for best average performance.
  • The receiver is oriented south in the northern hemisphere to receive maximum radiation throughout the day. (f) Liquid inlet temperature:
  • As the liquid inlet temperature increases, the manifold operating temperature increases. This leads to increased losses and reduced efficiency.

(g) Dust on the visor:

  • The performance of the receiver decreases with dust particles on the visor because the transmitted radiation is reduced by 1%. Regular cleaning is required to obtain maximum efficiency from the collector.
