(a) Let the number be x.

:. Its thrice number will be 3x.

Then , according to the data,

10 - 3x = 7

:. -3x = 7-10

:. -3x = -3

(b) Let the number be x.

:. Its one fourth will be

$\frac{x}{4}$

Then , according to the data,

$x \: + \: \frac{x}{4} = \frac{4x + x}{4} = \frac{5x}{4}$

$\frac{5x}{4} = 40$
