Write equation for the following statements a) Thrice of a number subtracted from 10, gives 7.
b) A number added to its one fourth gives 40​

(a) Let the number be x.

:. Its thrice number will be 3x.

Then , according to the data,

10 - 3x = 7

:. -3x = 7-10

:. -3x = -3

x = 1

(b) Let the number be x.

:. Its one fourth will be

 \frac{x}{4}

Then , according to the data,

x  \: +  \:  \frac{x}{4}  =  \frac{4x + x}{4}  =  \frac{5x}{4}

 \frac{5x}{4}  = 40

5x \:  =  \: 160

x \:  = 32
