Longitudinal wave: If the vibrations of the particles of the medium conveying a wave are to and fro and parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave, then the wave is called a longitudinal wave.
Transverse wave: If the vibrations of the particles of the medium conveying a wave are perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave, the wave is called a transverse wave.
Longitudinal wave:-Particles in the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.
Transverse wave:-The particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction propagation of the wave.
Longitudinal wave:-This cannot be polarized.
Transverse wave:-This wave can be polarized.
Longitudinal wave:- One condensation and a rarefaction constitute one wave.
Transverse wave:-One crest and one trough constitute one wave.

1) Transverse waves contain one trough and one crest while longitudinal waves contain one compression and one rarefaction.
2) T.W. can be polarised but L.W. can't be polarised.
3) T.W. can only propagate in solids and on the surface of liquids but L.W. can propagate through all types of medium.
4)In T.W. particles travel perpendicular to the direction of wave but in L.w. particles travel parallel to the direction of medium.
5) When T.w. travel there is no change in density of medium but when L.W. travel change exist in the density of medium....
