Carbon compounds are important in many facets of the petrotchemicals industry as the feedstock is carbon-based. Carbon is also the basis of fuels such as coal and oil since both coal and oil are rich in carbon. Carbon as graphite is a good lubricant.Carbon is a key component of steel.

USES OF CARBON
- Carbon black is used in black ink and as filler in automobile tyres.
- Coke is used as a fuel and largely as a reducing agent in metallurgy.
- Carbon is used in the manufacture of water gas , producer gas and carbondisulphide. It is mainly used as reducing agent.
- In the form of graphite, it is used for electrodes in batteries and industrial electrolysis.
- Activated charcoal is used in adsorbing poisonous gas. Charcoal is also used in water filters to remove organic contaminators.
