Characteristics of stationary waves. The points where displacement is zero are called nodes and the points where the displacement is maximumare called antinodes. Pressurechanges are maximum at nodes andminimum at antinodes. All theparticles except those at the nodes, execute simple harmonic motions of same period.

Characteristics of stationary waves are listed below -

1 Stationary waves are also knows as standing waves.

2 These waves oscillate in time, and their amplitude remains constant.

Some characteristics of stationary waves are -

•Their energy is localized since there is no movement of waveform.

•The amplitude of stationary wave is zero at node, and maximum at antinode.

•Node is the starting point, and antinode is the just next highest point.

•All the particles in one vibrating loop, are in phase.

•Amplitude of vibration of each particle is different, except at nodes.

•There is no vibration in particles present at nodes.

•These waves oscillate with same frequency.

•Wavelength of stationary wave is calculated as twice the distance from one node to next node.
