Pressure Belts :-

On the Earth's surface, there are Seven Pressure Belts. They are Equatorial Low, the two Sub-Tropical Highs, the two Sub-Polar Low, and the two Polar Highs. Except the Equatorial Low, the others form matching pairs in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. The seven Pressure Belts are as follows.

1) The Equatorial Low Pressure Belts - This low pressure belt extends from 0 to 5° North and South of the Equator. Due to the vertical rays of the Sun here, there is intense heating.

2) Sub-Tropical Pressure Belts - At about 30° North and South of the Equator lies the area where the ascending equatorial air currents descends. This area is thus of high pressure. It is also called the Horse latitude. 

3) Sub-Polar Low Pressure belts - These belts are located between 60° and 70° in both the hemispheres and are known as Sub-Polar Low Pressure Belts.

4) Polar High Pressure Belts - At the North and South poles, between 70° and 90° North and South, the temperatures are always extremely low. The cold descending air gives rise to high pressures over the poles. These areas of Polar high pressure are known as the Polar Highs.These regions are characterised by permanent ice caps.

Planetary Winds :-

Similar air movements can occur on a worldwide scale in response to worldwide variations in temperature. These vast movements are called planetary winds. Planetary winds are distributed all over the globe and blow in the same direction throughout the year. These winds originate due to the presence of permanent high pressure and low pressure belts on the surface of the earth. The main types of planetary winds are the Trade Winds, the Westerlies and the Polar winds. These winds are also known as prevailing winds or permanent winds.

There are a total of 7 Pressure Belts on the surface of Earth viz., Equatorial Low, 2 Sub-Tropical Highs, 2 Sub-Polar Low, and 2 Polar Highs. All others exist in corresponding  Northern and Southern Hemisphere except the Equatorial Low Pressure Belt.

1) The Equatorial Low Pressure Belt extends from 0 to 5° North and South of the Equator and is the most hot portion of earth as the rays of sun have the highest intensity in this zone.

2) Sub-Tropical Pressure Belts or the Horse Latitude exist in 30° North and South of the Equator and here the upward moving equatorial air currents descend down.

3) Sub-Polar Low Pressure belts are found between 60° and 70° in both the hemispheres.

4) Polar High Pressure Belts or Polar Highs exist in between 70° and 90° North and South and here the temperatures are consistently very low. So, the permanent ice caps are present here.


Planetary Winds are similar movement of air that appear with high variations on worldwide scale. They blow in the same direction throughout the year. They are uniformly distributed on the entire surface of earth. They are, thus, prevailing winds or permanent winds viz., Trade Winds, the Westerlies and the Polar winds.
