during the day time earth receives Sun's heat in the form of Short WAVES during INSOLATION.
short waves can penetrate the EARTH'S atmosphere very easily.
At night when heat is RADIATED from the surface during TERRESTRIAL RADIATION it is in the form of Long waves.
long waves cannot penetrate the upper levels of the atmosphere and gets trapped in it. when more and more rays start getting trapped the temperature increases drastically.
this is known as GREENHOUSE EFFECT.

THIS GREENHOUSE EFFECT is further contributed when CO2 SO2 and other gases help in further increase in temperature.
there is hence an overall rise in EARTH'S temperature and due to this polar ice caps melt and this leads to GLOBAL WARMING.
