Characteristics :

This is the simplest and the most fundamentals tissue in animals which forms a sheet of cells to make up the protective covering over the animal body. The cells are cemented together by intercellular space for function. Epithelial tissue  rests over extra cellular matrix called basement layer.

Functions :

• It covers the body and protect it again any mechanical injury, effects of path gens.

• Such as virus and bacteria during and harmful chemicals and pollutants.

• In lung alveoli, epithelium helps in diffusion of gases between air and blood.

• Epithelium helps in healing of any injuries on the organ.
