# The Brahmaputra is 2,900 km long, and is one of the longest rivers in the world. It passes through three countries – Tibet Autonomous Region of China, two northeastern states in India and Bangladesh.

# The river originates from the Himalayas and gets drained into the Bay of Bengal.

# The Brahmaputra leaves a lot of fertile alluvial soil deposits on its river banks. However, at the same time, the river is in full spate almost all the time. This can be dangerous as the river occasionally tends to cause floods.

# The inhabitants residing in different parts of the river valley belong to various cultures and origins.

# The Saraighat Bridge was the first bridge across the river and was opened in 1962 near Guwahati, Assam.

Important features of the Brahmaputra river system :

1. The river Brahmaputra rises in Tibet , east of the Mansarowar lake from the Chemayungdung glacier.

2. It flows eastwards parallel to the Himalayas and on reaching Namcha Barwa (7757 m), it takes a sharp 'U' turn and enters India in Arunachal Pradesh through a gorge.

3. In Arunachal Pradesh it is called Dihang. It is joined by the Dibang and Lohit to form the Brahmaputra in Assam. In India, it flows for only 920 km and most of its course lies outside India.
