(3) Lower liquid alkanes are used as solvent.

(4) Alkanes with more than 35 C atoms (tar) are used for road surfacing.

(5) High molecular weight alkanes are waxes. They are used as lubricants. They are also used for the preparation of candles and carbon black (obtained by incomplete combustion of alkanes) is used in manufacture of printing ink, shoe polish, etc.
