Explanation:

This Bas Relief was created in the 7th or 8th century. It’s length is about 25 meters and it’s height is 12 meters. The name is “Arjuna’s Penance” which means “ascetic exercises” performed by Arjuna. He performed these exercises in order to get a super weapon, the “Pasupatha Astra” from Shiva. Pasupatha Astra was the equivalent of a machine-gun in the times of bow and arrow, a bow that was endlessly shooting arrows. Arjuna is shown as a thin old man standing on one leg with his hands above his head. The relief is impressive. The whole place with all the other monuments is worth seeing and makes a stop over in Mahabalipuram worthwhile.
