in in the old regime in France, the people were divided into three states.
The first state or the clergy group were priveleged from the birth. they were exempted from paying taxes. they extracted a tax called Tithe from the peasants.
the second is state or the noble group was also privileged from birth and exempted from paying taxes. the nobles enjoyed feudal privileges and extracted feudal dues from peasants.
The third Etate consisted of the rest of the population of France that was about 90%. they were not privileged and had to pay the taxes. it included businessman, merchant, lawyers, servants etc.
