Answer:

The centre of the earth is located at a distance of 6371 kilometre of its surface. Due to the movement taking place below the surface of the earth, the crustis subjected to stress of great magnitude. lf this stress exceed s a critical limit ,the energy gets released suddenly. As a result ,the earth's surface shakes. This shaking of the land is what we call earthquake.

There there are three waves are as follows........

(1) Primary wave

(2) Secondary wave

(3) Surface wave

(1) Primary wave: This are the waves first to reach the earth surface immediately after the energy is released in the interior. The waves travelling rapidly in the radial direction are called primary waves .Due to this waves, the grains in the rocks moves forward and backward in the direction of the wave.

(2) Secondary waves: The waves reporting at the surface after the primary waves are called secondary waves. These waves also radiate in all direction from the point of the focus of the earthquake. Due to this waves, the grain in the rocks move up and down, that is ,perpendicular to the direction of the movement of the waves. Therefore, the this waves are very destructive.

(3) Surface wave: Primary and secondary wave affect the surface on reaching it .As a result a new set of waves gets generated at the surface .These waves spread along the circumference of the earth. Due to these waves ,the grains in the rocks move up and down as also sideways .Therefore this waves proves to be the most destructive.
