Aurangzeb’s suspicious nature, religious bigotry, his policy towards the Rajputs and the Deccan.

Incompetent and degenerate Later Mughal rulers.

The corrupt, incapable and selfish nobility of the Later Mughal rulers.

The feudal organisation of the army, practice of taking women along on the battle-field and the failure of the Emperors to improve armaments and fighting tactics weakened the Mughal army.

The wasteful expenditure by the Shah Jahan, revolts and the wars during the reign of Aurangzeb, and the licentious life of the Later Mughals broke down the economy of the Empire.

The wars of succession destroyed the prestige and administration of the Empire.

Division of the nobility in two rival groups, viz. Indian Muslims and foreign Muslims.

Ascendancy of the Maratha power led to loss of territory and prestige of the Empire.

Attacks of Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah Abdali resulted in the drain of wealth and also loss of honour by the Empire.

The absence of the spirit of unity among Indians led to fissiparous tendencies which helped the British in capturing India.

Intellectual Bankruptcy because of which the Empire failed to get talented people for its services weakened it.

Absence of navy contributed towards the downfall of the Mughal Empire indirectly.

Failure of Mansabdari or Jagirdari system resulted in economic bankruptcy of the Empire and therefore, the expenditure of Empire exceeded the income. It also resulted in rivalry of nobles which weakened the Empire politically and administratively.
