mitochondrion------'

an organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur. It has a double membrane, the inner part being folded inwards to form layers (cristae).

Mitochondria :
----------------------------------------------------

Rod - shaped bodies with a double layer of outer skin. The inner layers forms a series of outer skin. The inner layer forms a series of folds providing a large surface area for the vital chemical reactions which go on inside the mitochondria (called the cells " powerhouse"). They are the places where simple substance taken into the cell are broken down to provide energy.

They contain enzymes necessary for the total oxidation of food and for release of high amount of energy in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) molecules. The body uses energy stored in ATP for synthesis of new chemical Compounds and for mechanical work. ATP is also known as energy currency of the cell.

Functions of Mitochondria :-
----------------------------------------------------

★ Aerobic Respiration :

Mitochondria are sites where Aerobic part of respiration called Krebs cycle is performed.

★ Energy :

Mitochondria provide energy ( in the form of ATP ) for vital activities of living cells, like synthesis of chemical Compounds, their transport and for mechanical work.

★ Intermediates :

They provide Intermediates for synthesis of various chemicals like fatty acids, steroids, chlorophyll, amino acids etc..
