This festival (Dipawali) has its own importance in Indian culture. This festival is celebrated on the day of new moon in the month of kartik. In diwali special excitement is seen among the Indian people. People start preparing for the festival from many months in advance. People clean their houses and shops and get them painted. The house is decorated with a new furnishings. Each shop in the market place is full of decorative goods. Different types of sweets adorn the market. There is a tradition of giving sweets and gifts to their relatives on this day. On the black night of new moon, thousands of lamps are lighted and converted into full moon night. There is a tradition of worship of lakshmi and ganesha. This is an important festival for the shopkeepers and businessmen. The merchants worship their books and accounts. In the puranas, dipawali is considered to be very important. On the same day rama, the king of ayodhya, had returned to ayodhya after cutting into exile of the fourteen years. The citizens of ayodhya had lit the whole city of ayodhya with lamps for welcoming them. Since then, this festival is celebrated with great gaiety.
