Answer:

During the battle, he fought valiantly, leading on the front line and firing arrows from his elephant. Even with his cavalry gone and his infantry suffering on all sides, his son dead and his remaining elephants and guards surrounded by Alexander, he fought on through his wounds. Like Alexander himself, he was a proud warrior who refused to give up without a fight, and took the field personally. His elephants slowly gave way or succumbed, his men fought valiantly against the Macedonians, and Porus himself was described as suffering many wounds before surrendering. Alexander saw a bit of himself in Poru-a warrior king. This was in contrast to Darius III, who let his bodyguard do the fighting and who twice when Alexander charged him. Alexander wanted to fight warriors of similar courage-while other Persian kings were brave, Darius disappointed him, so meeting Poru and his warriors was refreshing for Alexander.

Alexander was raised on the Illiad, an epic of warrior kings fighting personally against each other, aided by the gods themselves. Fortunately for him, Poru was raised on the Itihasa, whose books contain similar epics of warriors and their patron gods fighting on the field as per the duty of a ruler. As a Greek king fighting most of his life, Alexander saw kinship with the Ksatryia caste.
