A mercury thermometer uses mercury to detect temperature based on property of expansion of material on heating. It has a bulb filled with mercury on one of its end and other end sealed. When the bulb comes in contact with a hit object, the mercury present in the thermometer bulb expands and rises and when it comes in contact with cold object, it shrinks and goes down in the bulb again.
