A species is a group of living organisms, such as jellyfish or whales.

In the ocean, the largest animal in the world, the blue whale, lives alongside tiny zooplankton, which are actually made up of many animals so small you can't see them without a microscope! To make it easier to learn about so many different species of ocean animals, scientist have broken them down into categories.

Sharks and Rays

There are over 450 species of sharks in the ocean, and they range in size from 8 inches to 40 feet long! Sharks have been around since before dinosaur times, and they are at the top of the ocean food chain. The great white shark is known as the most dangerous to humans. Great white sharks have sharp teeth, are about 12 feet long, and can weigh 3,000 pounds.

Rays, such as stingrays and manta rays, are related to sharks. They have large, triangular wings that propel them through the water, and are some of the largest animals in the ocean.

Marine Mammals

Marine mammals include dolphins, whales, polar bears and sea otters. Many of these animals are loved by people and known to be highly intelligent. Dolphins can even be trained to do tricks, such as flips, tail walking, and jumping through hoops.

Explanation:

Aquatic animals are those animals that live in water. Those that live in ponds, lakes, and rivers are freshwater animals. The animals that live in the ocean are called marine animals. Some aquatic animals breathe oxygen from the water through gills, while others go to the surface to breathe air through lungs.
