The general formula for the homologous series of alcohols is given by C_nH_{(2n+1)} OH

Putting the values for n,

For n=1

Methanol  (C_1H_{3} OH) :

The number of carbon atoms in methanol is 1. It is the most basic alcohol compound and often used as antifreeze, solvent, fuel etc.

For n=2

Ethanol (C_2H_{5} OH) :

Ethanol, also called as ethyl alcohol is the second compound in alcohol series. It is majorly found in alcoholic beverages.

For n=3

Propanol (C_3H_{7} OH) :

Propanol or Propyl alcohol is mainly used as solvent or to produce other solvents.

For n=4

Butanol (C_4H_{9} OH) :

Butanol with 4 carbon atoms is the fourth member of the series. It is often used as paint thinner.
