A Grignard reagent has a formula RMgX where X is a halogen, and R is an alkyl or aryl (based on a benzene ring) group. For the purposes of this page, we shall take R to be an alkyl group.

A typical Grignard reagent might be CH3CH2MgBr.

The gridnard reagent is an oragnochemical reaction in which alkyl,vinyl,or aryl,-magneaium halides  add to a carbonyl group in an aldehyde or ketone. This reaction is an important tool for the formation of bonds between two carbon atoms. The reaction of an organic halide with magnesium is not a Grignard reaction, but provides a Grignard reagent.
