➦ Drugs are chemical substances which are generally prescribed as medicines for certain diseases. However, the abuse of drugs (using too much or in the wrong way) can lead to drug addiction. Most drugs affect the brain in such a way so as to cause euphoria. It motivates a person to use the same repeatedly.
➦ Drugs can be injected, inhaled or ingested. As the person uses the drug frequently, the brain adapts to the doses and the feeling of getting high eludes the person until the doses are increased. This is called developing tolerance. If a drug addict does not take regular doses, it will cause withdrawal symptoms.
➦ The long term use of drugs may affect certain bodily functions such as learning, judgement, decision making, memory and behaviour. Some effects of drug abuse are given here.
- A weakened immune system.
- Heart conditions like abnormal heart rates to heart attacks; slow breathing.
- Infections from used needles like AIDS (HIV infection).
- Hallucinations leading to mental confusion, nausea, tremors and body pain.
