GUWAHATI: Two hundred years ofAssam's printing historywould be celebrated at theGuwahati book fair. The 10-day event will kick start from October2 on the premises ofAssam Engineering Instituteat Chandmari. Around 24 new books by theAssamPublication Board will be released as stated by education and health ministerHimanta Biswa Sarma at a meeting on Sunday. Renowned literary figures likeGirish Karnad, Ashok Bajpai, Sunil Kothari and K Sachidanand will be present atthe fair. The minister said 'KirtanPuthi' in Odia, translated by Sahitya Academy awardee Jyotsna Rawat, would be released at the fair. "We will introduce 10 new writers and around 141 publication houses are also likely to participate in the fair, out of which 100 publication houses happen to befrom Assam," he said. A unique religious piece the 'Sachitra Kirtanputhi' has been acquired from theBritish museumand willbe reprinted, he added. "We wantthe festival to act as a platform for the congregation of old and new generation writers so that the readers get a taste of different styles of writing," he said. Writer Lakshminandan Bora will be presented with a special life time achievement award for his contribution to Assamese literature. The award will comprise 3 lakh rupees cashand a special citation. "The Assam Publication Board's oldest category of awards, the lifetime achievement award started way back in 1973, but from 2000 it was stopped. But, again we are going to revive it this time," he said. Sarma also stated that to ensure more participation, Assam EngineeringInstitute playground has been chosen as the venue instead of theManiram Dewan Trade Centre.
