Explanation:

Sulphur dioxide is a reducing agent but in some cases, it acts as an Oxidizing agents.

For example :-

In the clause process

SO2 + 2H2S ---> 3S + 2H2O

Here, SO2 is reduced by hydrogen sulphide to give elemental Sulphur.

Reducing agent :-

SO2 + H2O ---> H2SO3

SO_2+Cl_2\rightarrow SO_2Cl_2.

  • The compounds which themselves oxidised and donated its electron to help other species to get reduced is called reducing agent.
  • Sulfur dioxide can act as a reducing agent as well as an oxidising agent.
  • The reaction of sulfur dioxide as a reducing agent is as follows-
  • SO_2+Cl_2\rightarrow SO_2Cl_2.
  • Here the oxidation state of S changes from +4 to +6 so, it is oxidised and acts as a reducing agent.
