Last Monday, I happened to see the famous Gemini Circus. There is no doubt the circus show was superb . . Both men and animals did unbelievable acts. No one could really
restrain himself from praising their skills.
However, when I learnt how animals are cruelly treated to make them perform , I was
shocked. I learnt that elephants, lions and tigers are made to perform with the use of an
electrically charged whip. Horses, too, are whipped. Sometimes, these hapless animals are
not given food due to them. They remain starved. They are kept in small cages and are also
chained. They lose their natural behaviour. They yearn for freedom. They look sad and
bored, but no one bothers about their plight. The circus men are happy with the profit they
earn. The spectators are happy that they can see wonderful feats done by animals which
they do not see in routine life.
I strongly feel the circus shows, involving the use of animals, should be banned. Animals
should be freed and sent to their natural surroundings in the forest. Those who treat ani
mals cruelly should be punished by law.
