Coal is a hard rock which can be burned as a solid fossil fuel. It is mostly carbon but also contains hydrogen, sulphur, oxygen and nitrogen. It is a sedimentary rock formed from peat, by the pressure of rocks laid down later on top.

Hope it helps!

Good luck.

Coal starts to develop by the decay of plants under moist but essentially sub aerial conditions. The usual environment for the initiation of a coal bed development is a swamp where plant material accumulates without a complete oxygenation.

This accumulated plant material is subjected to compression and removal of moisture and oxygen until a high grade of coal development takes place. As the plant material is exposed to high pressures and temperatures, the coal changes to a series of different grades forming different mineral assemblages.
