▶The Great Bengal Famine of 1943 was a large famine in Bengal, a state in British-ruled India,

✔✔Total deaths: Estimated 2.1 to 3 million in Bengal alone

Period: 1943–1944

Country: British India

▶The causes of Bengal famine are much more complex and intertwined than just supply shortage. In case of Bengal, the primary reason for the famine was shortages in Rice. .

▶.. 1943 was a relatively bad year in terms of rice harvest (down 5% year-on-year), but not enough to cause a famine.

The Bengal famine of 1943 (Bengali: pañcāśēra manvantara) was a major faminein the Bengal province[B] in British India during World War II. An estimated 2.1–3 million,[A]out of a population of 60.3 million, died of starvation, malaria and other diseases aggravated by malnutrition, population displacement, unsanitary conditions and lack of health care. Millions were impoverished as the crisis overwhelmed large segments of the economy and social fabric. Historians have frequently characterised the famine as "man-made",[C] asserting that wartime colonialpolicies created and then exacerbated the crisis. A minority view holds that the famine arose from natural causes.[D]
