Social problems arise out of pathological social conditions. They occur in all societies—simple (that is, small, isolated and homogeneous with a strong sense of group solidarity, and which change slowly) as well as in complex (which are characterized by impersonal secondary relations, anonymity, loneliness, high mobility and extreme specialization, and where change is faster), that is, wherever and whenever a relationship is affected between a group of individuals leading to maladjustments and conflicts.

The characteristics of a social problem:

  • The social issues are circumstances that have harmful social guidance.  All social issues are deviations from the 'ideal' condition. These social issues have a common nature basis.  All social issues are of social origin.
  • All social issues are caused by social pathology.  All of the social issues are interconnected. Across their findings, both social problems are cultural, that is, they impact all sections of society.
  • Social issues are socially responsible, that is, they need a common commitment to their response. In all cultures, social problems arise.
