The Imad Shahi dynasty was founded in 1490 by the governor of Gawil, Fathullah Imad-ul-Mulk. He was the ruler of Berar. Berar was one of the Sultanates in the Deccan Plateau. By birth a Hindu, he was captured while he was a small boy and converted to Islam.

Burhan Imad Shah who was Fathullah Imad-ul-Mulk’s fourth successor, was deposed by his minister Tufail Khan in 1568. But, following an invasion by Murtaza Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar, Tufail Khan was captured and put to death, and Berar was annexed to Nizam Shah’s kingdom.

Short note on Imadshahi of Berar:

The Imadshahi of Berar belonged to one of the five Deccan Sultanates succeeding in the downfall of the Bahmani Kingdom. The dynasty was accomplished by Fethullah Imad Shah who was actually a Hindu. The capital of Imadshahi was located at Ellichpur.

The Imadshahi constantly faced attack from Nizam Shah for the town of Pathri which was under the territory of Imadshahi rule. The Imadshahi rule lasted from 1490-1574 AD and the territory finally came under the control of Mughals in 1596.

The Bahmani Kingdom was the independent Muslim Kingdom in South India. Fethullah was originally a Hindu from Vijaynagara who was imprisoned at an early age. Due to his potential, Fahthullah received the title Imad-ul-Mulk.
