Litmus is a natural dye extracted from a parasite called lichens which are normally present in the barks of a tree. We extract these lichens and then convert them into litmus. Litmus is commonly used in the form of litmus paper which comes in red and blue colour, it is used to test or indicate if a chemical is acidic or basic. if the paper turns red or stays red while dipping it in a chemical then it's an acid and if it turns blue or stays blue then the chemical is a base and if it is a neutral/salt then it turns purple.
