•picketing is the post, stake, pale, or peg that is used in a fence or barrier, to fasten down a tent, etc. a person stationed by a union or the like outside a factory, store, mine, etc., in order to dissuade or prevent workers or customers from entering it during a strike.

•The purpose of picketing is to exert pressure on the employer by persuading other people not to do work for, or do business with, the employer. However, a picket line must be peaceful and cannot be used to forcibly prevent people from entering an employer's premises.

•The purpose of the picket is to peacefully encourage non-striking employees and members of the public to oppose a lock-out or to support strikers involved in a protected strike. The nature of that support can vary. It may be to encourage employees not to work during the strike or lock-out.
