The term subaltern means 'bottommost ranks. ' It was Antonio Gramsci who considered important that history should also include the bottommost rank of the society. ... Subaltern history became an important academic school of historiography after Ranjit Guha included this concept in his writings . Subaltern is a word used by the British army to denote a subordinate officer, and “subaltern studies” was coined by Indian scholars to describe a variety of approaches to the situation of South Asia, in particular in the colonial and postcolonial era . The SSG arose in the 1980s, influenced by the scholarship of Eric Stokes and Ranajit Guha, to attempt to formulate a new narrative of the history of India and South Asia. The group started at the University of Sussex and then continued and traveled, mainly through Guha's students. The literal meaning of “Subaltern” is “belonging to an inferior rank or position”. Sociologists study and view the Indian society from various perspectives; subaltern perspective is one of them. The subaltern perspective can be depicted through the caste, race, occupation, class, age, color, and many more factors . By „subaltern‟ Spivak means the oppressed subjects. or more generally those “of inferior rank” (283). She goes on to add that “In the. context of colonial production, the subaltern has no history and cannot speak, the. subaltern as female is even more deeply in shadow”
