When an alkyl or benzyl halide is allowed to react with an ethanolic solution of ammonia, it undergoes nucleophilic substitution reaction in which the halogen atom is replaced by an amino ( - NH2) group. This process of cleavage of the carbon-halogen bond is known as ammonolysis.

Explanation:
Alkyl halides on reaction with ammonia yield primary, secondary and tertiary amines. A base is required (OH-) in the ammonolysis reaction to abstract proton from the ammonium salt and form amine.
When ammonia is in excess primary amine is the main yield. However when the alkyl halide is in excess tertiary amine is the main product.
