South Indian merchant guilds were made by merchants and traders to organise and expand their trading activities. The Indian culture was exported to the other parts of the world through merchant guilds. Some of the trade guilds are Gatrigas, Nakaras, Mummuridandas etc.
Some trade guilds were so powerful that they decided the fortunes of the kingdom. The trade guild of Nanadeshis is one such example, who not only nourished the local development projects but also lent money to the kings.
