Name of the chapter - The Sermon At Benares.

Source - Betty Renshaw

Class 10

Summary -

  • Buddha's early life - There was a Prince whose name was Siddhartha Gautama. He married a princess and had a son. He enjoyed all comforts. He was kept away from the sufferings of the world. He didn't know what is pain.
  • The sight of suffering - During hunting he came across a sick man. Then he saw an aged man, a funeral procession, a begging monk. He went out into the world to seek enlightenment.
  • His wanderings - He wandered for seven years. He sat under a fig tree(tree of wisdom). He achieved enlightenment- awakening into reality. He also shared his own views to other people about life and death in Benares.
  • The story of Krishna Gotami - Krishna Gautami's only son died. She came to Buddha, asked him to revive her son. Buddha asked her to bring mustard seeds from a house where no death has occurred.
  • Buddha's preaching - He preached that life is brief. There is pain and suffering throughout life. No one can avoid it. Even birth is followed by death. No one can save anyone from death.
  • Attaining a peace - We can't obtain peace of mind by grieving or weeping. Death is sure. Peace of mind comes by giving up weeping, grieving, and lamentation.

The message  -

It is an immortal message of Buddha to humanity. He says that we should accept the bitter truth of life. We should realize that we all are mortal and will die. Death cannot avoid it is sure. No one has the power to bring back the life of a dead one. The fast we accept this fact the fast we attain peace of mind. Life is full of pains, sufferings. We should not sweep of grieve at some one's death. He said that - 'NOT for weeping nor for grieving will obtain peace of mind: on the contrary, his pain will be the greater and his body will suffer.'
