Bismillah Khan
Born on 21 March 1916, Bismillah belongs to a well-known family of musicians from Bihar. The young boy took to music early in life. At the age of three when his mother took him to his maternal uncle’s house in Benaras (now Varanasi), Bismillah was fascinated watching his uncles practise the shehnai. With the opening of the All India Radio in Lucknow in 1938 came Bismillah’s big break. He soon became an often-heard shehnai player on radio. When India gained independence on 15 August 1947, Bismillah Khan became the first Indian to greet the nation with his shehnai. National awards like the Padmashri, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan were conferred on him. In 2001, Ustad Bismillah Khan was awarded India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. He said "While in Mumbai, I think of only Benaras and the holy Ganga. And while in Benaras, I miss the unique mattha of Dumraon.”

1. Patient- Bismillah Khan was a very patient individual. As a child, he would not only sit patiently while his uncle Ali Bux played the shenai, but also enjoyed the music.
2. Talented- The talented musician would play the regular ragas on his instrument, and also attempt the melodies which were deemed beyond the scope of the shehnai. He knew his notes extremely well and was able to stretch the range of the instrument and play the most difficult ragas.

5. Patriotic- Bismillah Khan received a lot of love wherever he went, yet his patriotic heart belonged to India. He refused to settle down in America because his connection with Benares and the river Ganga was very strong and he missed India tremendously.
6. Secular- Though born in a Muslim family, the secular musician was extremely comfortable playing the shehnai in the temple of Balaji and Mangala Maiya. Also, as a child, he sang at the Bihariji temple.
