Revolt of 1857

The revolt of 1857 was the conscious beginning of the Independence struggle against the colonial tyranny of the British. The revolt began on May 10, 1857 at Meerut as a sepoy mutiny. The revolt shook the foundation of British in India.

Causes of Failure of the revolt of 1857 :

  • Lack of Co-ordination among the Leaders :

The action was supposed to begin on 31 May, 1857, but the May 10 incidents disturbed the whole plan. No serious effort was made to relieve the siege of Delhi by Nana Saheb or any other leader.

  • Lack of efficient Leadership :

Rani Lakshmi Bai, Tantia Tope and Kunwar Singh, no doubt, attained notable victories against the British. But their activities were confined to a narrow area and extended over a brief period. On the other hand, the British cause was very ably promoted by Leaders like Lawrence, Havelock, Nicholson and Campbell.

  • The war was localised :

Many parts of India were not affected by the uprising at all. Punjab remained absolutely quiet. Indian rulers like Sindhia and the Nizam of Hyderabad stood by the side of the British. Even Sindh, Rajasthan and Bengal remain unaffected.

  • No scheme of a National state :

The rulers of the Indian states had no idea of a National state for all India. Independence was only meant for the ruling chiefs. There was no freedom for the common people in it.
