Breathing involves two processes inhalation and exhalation.

Inhalation:

  1. The diaphragm contracts and become dome shaped.
  2. The intercostal muscles between the ribs contracts, causing the area of the chest cavity to increase.
  3. Size of lungs increase as a result there is low air pressure inside lungs. As a result air rushes from outside environment to lungs.

Exhalation:

  1. The diaphragm relaxes, moving upwards into the chest cavity.
  2. The intercostal muscles between the ribs relax, causing the area of the chest cavity to reduce.
  3. Size of lungs decrease as a result there is high pressure inside lungs. As a result air rushes from lungs to outside environment.
