Answer:The main step involved in extraction of carbonate ores is Calcination

Explanation:The steps involved are:

1)Concentration- it is the process of removal of impurities called gangue like dust,etc from the ore using physical methods

2) Oxidation by Calcination- It is the process of obtaining oxide from the carbonate ore by heating it in the absence of oxygen.

For eg- ZnCo3 ------> ZnO + CO2

3) Reduction- It is the process of obtaining the metal from its oxide by using reducing agents like Carbon, aluminium,etc

For eg- ZnO + C-----> Zn + C

4) Refining- It is the process of obtaining pure metal

The carbonate ores are changed into oxides by heating strongly in limited air. This process is called calcination.

ZnCO3(s)→ZnO(s)+CO2(g)
Catalyst: Heating

The metal oxides are then reduced to the corresponding metals by using suitable reagents such as carbon. For, example, when zinc oxide is heated with carbon, it is reduced to metallic zinc.

ZnO+C→Zn+CO
