★ This poem is expressing the poet's deep grief. He wrote this poem , when his friend died. The poet's kinda lamenting on his friends death. He somewhat feeling alone too. He lost his interest in the outer world. He felt like he was about to leave the world soon and he was correct he died just after one year after writing this poem.
This poem is also considered as the saddest poem of the P.B. Shelley.

This poem is basically divided into 2 stanza :
Stanza 1 -
O world! o life ! O time!
On whose last step I climb,
Trembling at that where I had stood before;
When will return the glory of your prime?
No more—Oh, never more!
Word Explanation :
Through this stanza , poet is expressing his grief. He was thinking about the time in past when he was appreciated and glorified by the people's. But now, he is feeling like he is at the end stage of his journey in this mortal world. The poet, also did comparison between ladder and himself. He imagined himself like at the end step ( rung ). He is no more interested in this world of possessions.
The poet says that there was a time when he used to cop up with the hardships ,but now his legs are shivering like an old man. He even asked a question, when his that time came back again when he used to be strong to handle any sort of trouble ? His glorified young age. He lost his desire to live in this world anymore.
Stanza 2 :
Out of the day and night
A joy has taken flight;
Fresh spring, and summer, and winter hoar,
Move my faint heart with grief, but with delight
No more—Oh, never more!
Word Explanation :
Through this stanza, poet expressing his disappointment towards the day and night , nature , joy. He says now nature is also incapable of making him delight again like before. The poet feels that he is just living , no hopes , no joy. The beautiful scenario like blooming spring , summer , the smell of soil during rain , foggy winter all became joyless and desireless for him. Now, all the beauties if nature also add up in his grief and making him even more sad.

The greatest grief in life is the death of ones and one's inability to stop them from dying as poets friend died. Instead of lamenting on it , the wise should take it as a natural and inevitable happening. Weeping will not revive the deceased. Instead it will only increase the pain and disturb the peace of mind.
